The CATS group has been very active this year building awareness about big cat conservation in China within the Beijing community. The team felt very motivated after they received very positive feedback from people at their Bar Camp Presentation in Beijing last April (2014). The World Health Organization (WHO) Beijing office and Yoga Yard also invited the CATS group to give talks about conservation of felids in China. In May, Justine met with the yoga community at Yoga Yard to discuss the conservation of snow leopards in China’s high altitude regions. Shortly after in July, Alice and Justine joined forces to present a talk entitled “Snow leopard and Leopard conservation in China” at the WHO regional office. The success and positive reaction to these initial talks have inspired the CATS to also target the younger generation; the students in elementary, middle and high school in the Beijing community. In order to do this, the CATS have partnered with a local NGO, the Institute of Environment and Development, in order to contact local schools and give short informal talks. The first of these talks took place in IED’s annual summer school at Song Shan National Forest Park. The CATS group hopes to continue to work with IED and other local environmental organizations to spread knowledge about China’s rare and endangered species.
